What is the requirement to join the WLCC Swim Team?
- All swimmers must be a West Lake Country Club (WLCC) Member. Ages 5-18 are able to join the Swim Team as long as they are able to swim independently the length of the pool (25 meters) within 2 minutes 15 seconds. He/she may rest on the lane rope as needed but not use the rope to propel him/her forward. We understand all children have their strengths and weaknesses, and our coaches will work with them to strengthen their ability to swim distance. If there is any doubt they will be able to participate and feel as if they need additional swim lessons prior to joining the team, our coaches will communicate with the parents immediately. We encourage all of our children to try. In most cases each child is swimming the distance without rope assistance by the first official meet. If, however, the swimmer decides not to participate on the team, he/she will be refunded after the first week of practice.

What does my child need to do to prepare on the day of a swim meet?
- Wear team swimsuit.
- Bring goggles, a cap, and one or two towels, sunscreen, and bug spray to the meet.
- Rest and drink lots of water the day of the meet.
- Eat healthy meals and snacks such as fruit and protein. There will be concessions available at each home meet and usually at away meets.
- Make sure your child has their events "marked" on their arm before the meet. Please see the Swim Meet 101 Attachment regarding how to read a heat sheet and mark your child for his/her events (Attachment below).
-
Should I print my own heat sheet for the meet?
- YES, we recommend that all parents/volunteers and spectators print their own copy of the heat sheet prior to coming to the meet, as copies will not be available at the meet. Additional note: many parents like to highlight their kids events and their kids' friends events to keep track throughout the meet of when everyone is swimming.
-
How many events will my child swim?
- The maximum number of events each swimmer can be in is 2 relays, and 3 individual events.
- Relays consist of 4 swimmers and limited relays are allowed to be entered in each meet. Not every child will be in a relay.
- Relays are a privilege. Relays are rewards to those swimmers that come to practice and try their best. Some relays are scratched or thrown out before a meet begins due to a swimmer not being able to attend. If this happens, coaches will try their best to find another relay for the child to swim in.
-
What is a Medley Relay?
- A medley relay consists of all four strokes. The first swimmer swims backstroke, second swimmer swims breaststroke, third swimmer swims butterfly, and the last swimmer swims freestyle. 6 and under swimmers do not participate in this type of relay.
-
What do I need to do if my child can not make it to a scheduled meet?
- Please notify your coach/s immediately if you are unable to attend the scheduled meet. They will need to find a replacement swimmer or notate that you are not participating. It is very important to let them know ASAP so they do not have to scratch any relays that your child may be in. Scratching an event will disappoint the other swimmers that are signed up in that event.
-
How long do swim meets last?
- Swim meets usually last about 4 hours. Swimmers arrive 1 to 1 1/2 hours (depends on the meet) before the meet starts to warm up.
-
What is Time Trials?
- Time Trials is a practice in-team swim meet in which every swimmer swims all 4 strokes to get a starting time for each event. This allows the coaches to see what strokes need more attention at practice.
-
What is the Divisional meet?
- This swim meet is one of the biggest meets of the season and is the last one at the end of the season. In 2026 Divisionals will be hosted similar to the 2025 Divisional meet. Two "dual-meets" will be held at neighborhood pools and then linked to have all 4 teams times compete against each other. This is the meet that we prepare all season for and, therefore, we need as many swimmers as possible to attend this meet.
-
How can we see the results from the previous meet?
- A document will be posted within a day or two of the completed meet. You are also available to see times posted for your child by signing into the Swimtopia mobile app. Your child will also be awarded ribbons for each event he/she places.
-
Volunteering
- Each family must have a parent volunteer at each meet. Without parent volunteers the swim meet would not be possible. Please see each meet registration to sign up for your volunteer position. If you have questions and would like more information don't hesitate to reach out.
-
Who do I contact with questions/concerns regarding coaching, registration, volunteering, etc.?
- Please contact a board member versus talking directly to the coaches regarding administrative concerns. You may contact us using the contact us link or you can call Angela VanGroll at 206-619-3136
-
When is it ok to talk to the Coaches about my child?
- Please do not approach the coaches during practice as they are busy helping swimmers. You may email them directly or approach them after practice when they are not supervising swimmers in or around the pool.
- Please see information below on how to read a heat sheet and how to mark your child for swim meets. We want all of our families to feel comfortable joining our team so if you have any questions or have concerns please feel free to contact us!
